The making of energy efficient datacenters

The Crooked E: The Unshredded Truth About Enron is a wonderful movie to watch. It is based on the book, The anatomy of greed, written by a former employee of Enron, Brian Cruver.  One interesting thing that comes on our minds is the size of all power companies. They are all huge. We all depend on power for just about everything and yet very rarely do we think about conserving energy. A typical PC for example takes about 135 watts of power. A data center with about a 1000 servers should typically take about 135 x 1000 Watts or 135 Kilowatts and that would just power the computers. This does not include the air-conditioning and lighting. According to to a research paper sponsored by The California Energy Commission in a datacenter about 50% of the total energy consumed is by the servers and  about 35% is the air conditioners.

Postnuke – Beyond CMS (Part II)

In the first part we learnt how to install Postnuke in the barebones state. We’ll now install some cool modules and have a fully functional site.
The site would have a CMS for articles, news, dynamic menus , a forum for user interaction and  a gallery for pictures and videos. Postnuke has some good features such as multiple theme support, user level control and management, multilanguage support, polls,  weblinks , faq, downloads etc. There are many other good modules also available. One can search for these on the postnuke site in places like hotscripts.com. As mentioned in Part I of this article, we’ll be installing content express, gallery and pnphpbb2.

Postnuke – Beyond CMS (Part I)

Content Management Systems are getting popular by the day, and for good reason too. The first stage of any web site is a simple good looking site which has some simple html pages. These pages are mostly our brochure with an about us and a contact us page. But sooner or later we feel the need to update our site and add more features of it. Enter… Content Management Systems (CMS).  As the name suggests a CMS is a system which helps you manage the content of your site. Your site now becomes dynamic and you are able to change the contents with little of no knowledge of html.

I still remember the first time I installed KDE

. It was way back in 1998. KDE 1.0 was not yet released. It was a day before our presentation of our main project in College. Our main project was called JC++. JC++ a platform independent C++. The concept was that of JAVA but the programmer wrote code in C++. There was a compiler which compiled the C++ code for a VM. Then the interpreter would interpret the byte-code. We were a 4 member team. The project was a tough one and we really could not finish it the way we wanted it to be. However, it was a great experience on its own. I had all my project partners at my place for about a month before the project was completed. Sangeetha was the only one who used to come from her home everyday. She was also the only one who was really serious about getting the code to work. The thing I like about her the most is her desire to never give up. By the end the other 3 including me had given up. But Sangeetha was as confident as ever that we’ll finish.
